Why Standard “One-Size-Fits-All” Readers Fail Men

The Problem
Standard reading glasses are typically 135mm–140mm wide. For men with larger head sizes, this forces the frames to bow outward, putting constant pressure on the temples. Over time this leads to bent frames, stressed hinges, and the familiar "temple headache" many people feel by midday.

The Why
Most eyewear manufacturers reduce cost by producing a single universal frame mold. It’s cheaper to manufacture — but it leaves anyone with a wider face stuck wearing glasses that were never designed for them.

The Solution
Our XL readers start at 145mm–160mm frame width. We widen the bridge and extend the temple arms so the glasses sit naturally across your face. That keeps the lenses centered on your eyes — instead of being pushed forward by pressure at the temples.

Not All Reading Glasses Are Created Equal

The “Hat Size” Rule

If you wear a Large or XL hat (7⅜+), or notice that standard sunglasses feel "toy-like" on your face, these frames were designed specifically for you.

Specific Measurements

  • Frame Width: 138mm
  • Temple Length: 150mm
  • Bridge: 18mm

The “Perfect Fit” Promise

If they still feel too tight or look too small, we’ll exchange them or refund you — no questions asked.

The 'Big Guy' Consenus

“Very nice, well made and best of all a good fit for the size.”

“I'm a big guy (6'5", 250 lbs.) with a wide face. I've used WalMart readers for years, most recently the Foster Grants, which I like, but my local WalMart has stopped carrying. I'd look around the Web occasionally for extra-wide readers, but pickings were usually pretty slim. Until I found DebSpecs.com. WOW. Initially, I decided to try a pair of their Big Guy bifocals, but ultimately decided that I didn't like the bifocal 'thing' (I've always used single strength lenses). So I contacted the company to return the Big Guys for a pair of the Gladiators in single strength. No problems; the company was very easy to work with to make the exchange. And the Gladiators are EXCELLENT. Solid build (not Ray-Ban solid, but pretty solid for non-prescription reading glasses). And they don't break the bank. My wife loves them. Now I'm looking at some shades and maybe even some transitionals. DebSpecs.com and the Gladiators definitely have a new fan! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! P.S. - For DebSpecs: One thing I'd love would be if you offered a 'blonde' tortoise shell with dark _green_ lenses (not gray-green). Kind of a 'Havana' look in a larger size. That's a classic style that isn't seen much anymore. Also, an oversized 'ClubMaster' style (not the Wayfarer Max style - those break at the nosepiece) would definitely find a place on my Christmas list. Thanks!”

XL Fit Questions, Answered

A few quick answers to the questions people ask most before choosing XL frames.

How do I know if I need XL glasses?

If regular readers feel tight at the temples, leave marks, or slide forward, you likely need XL sizing. Most men who measure around 145 mm or more from temple to temple are more comfortable in XL frames.

What width is considered XL for glasses?

XL frames typically run from about 145 mm to 160 mm+ in total frame width. Our XL men’s styles are specifically chosen in this range to fit wider faces and bigger heads.

How do I measure my face for XL glasses?

Use a ruler or soft measuring tape and measure straight across your face from temple to temple. Then choose frames with a total width within about 10 mm of that number. If you’re between sizes, it’s usually better to go slightly wider.

Do wider glasses actually feel more comfortable?

Yes. Wider frames reduce pressure at the temples, help prevent slipping, and distribute weight more evenly. If your current glasses feel tight by midday, XL frames usually feel like a big relief.

What frame styles work best for big heads?

Rectangles, bold squares, and larger aviators tend to balance wider faces best. Look for frames labeled Large, XL, or XXL, and check the width measurements if you’re unsure.

Are XL glasses heavier than regular glasses?

Not necessarily. Many XL frames are made from lightweight plastics or metals that keep them sturdy without feeling bulky. We curate XL styles designed for comfortable all-day wear.

Are these XL frames only for men?

No. Anyone with a wider face can wear XL frames. This collection is styled with men in mind, but the sizing works for any big-noggin wearer who wants more room and comfort.

Do you offer bifocal, blue light, or sunglass options in XL sizes?

Yes. Many XL frames are available as single-vision readers, dual-strength bifocals, blue light readers, high-power readers, and sunglass readers. Use the tiles at the top of the page to shop by lens type.

What if I’m between sizes or not sure which XL frame to choose?

When in doubt, choose the frame that’s slightly wider rather than tighter. A little extra room is more comfortable and can often be adjusted. You can also start with our widest styles (like Big Guy) and work down from there.
